Helen Sanderson - Artist

Meet Helen Sandeson - ArtistMy work reflects my interest in history, recording and storytelling.

As an artist I work with painting, mixed media, collage, drawing and printmaking and artist's books.

I paint with oils, acrylics and watercolours, and use a variety of mixed media.

I am also a printmaker, working mainly in the spontaneous form of mono printing. Artist’s books have become an increasingly important part of my arts practice. I enjoy draw, and have a quite a library of books of my daily drawings.

I have been exhibiting in galleries since 1990.

"Antarctica" Series

The Antarctica series followed a remarkable journey to the Antarctic Peninsula.  It is such an extraordinary experience, and I couldn't imagine anyone going there and not being profoundly affected by the pristine beauty, the rugged majesty and vastness of this unique wilderness area. I drew and photographed, and was lucky enough to be able to go ashore at every opportunity and see close up so many aspects of Antarctica. I continued for the next couple of years to create works based on this experience.

"Farm" Series

In my Farm Series, I work with the special images that relate to my country childhood, such as the big open skies, the hills surrounding our farm and the grapevines planted and grown by my grandfather, uncle and father on the border highlands in south eastern Queensland. These painted landscapes establish a link between family history and place through imagery and text. This is especially so in the Correspondence and Postcard series within the Farm Series. I have been intermittently working on the Ballandean landscape in Queensland's Granite Belt area for fourteen years.

"Dance" Series

The Dance Series is a body of works on paper completed while I was artist-in-residence with the Australian Folkloric Dance Company, now World Dance. I worked directly from the dancers while they were in rehearsal. The bulk of works in this series are works on paper, with some artist’s books and paintings. "Helen Sanderson – the Folkloric Dance Series" toured Queensland under the auspices of the Queensland Performing Arts Trust and the Queensland Arts Council.

"Symphony" Series

Another series I have worked on is the Symphony Orchestra Series. This series is all works on paper.  There are 16 etchings which have been  editioned to series of between 5 and 50. There are monoprints and drawings, and several artist’s books.  "Helen Sanderson – the Symphony Orchestra Series"  toured Queensland under the auspices of the Queensland Performing Arts Trust and the Queensland Arts Council.

Travel

In recent years I have done a lot of international travel.  I have completed a significant number of travel journals from these travels.  I have also worked with the imagery from these travels in further books in my studio on my return.  Books have been created about Antarctica, Turkey, Italy, Thailand, Malaysia, America, South America, the UK, France, as well as travels from within Australia.

My resume  details my history, exhibitions, and awards.
