Remembered and Seen -
Exhibition at Warwick Art Gallery
March 22 to April 14 2002
Artist: Helen Sanderson
This exhibition explored the landscape of the local region
through painting, drawing, memory and photography. The two reference points are Ballandean, where the artist grew up and Palgrove Station west of Warwick.

Helen Sanderson’s family came to the southern parts of the
Granite Belt region in the mid 1800’s, with her grandfather settling on the farm
in Ballandean where her father and his brother farmed for fifty-five years. The
Smith family were pioneers of the area, contributing significantly to the early
fruit industry. The family farm Helen grew up on was typical of its day. They
grew mostly grapes, with some apricots, peaches, apples, plums and pears. It
was all dry farming. She spent her primary school years at Ballandean, then her
secondary schooling was at both Stanthorpe State High School and St Catharine’s
School in Warwick.
The property Palgrove is owned by Peter and Valerie
Bondfield. Helen met them through attending a live-in workshop there some years
ago, and has continued to visit for the past three years, documenting the
property each time. She has built up a large body of work about this beautiful
location. She appreciates the enthusiasm and support of these patrons of the
arts.
Included in this exhibition were many artists books,
paintings and memory boxes.
