  •  June 2009 - Helen Sanderson is one of the 130 Queenslanders whose unique stories are told in the recently released book  Queenslanders All Over.  The book was written by Joan Burton Jones, and published by Bond University Press.  Prime Minister and Queenslander Kevin Rudd wrote the foreword for the book.

Queenslanders All Over is an in-depth look at sport, business, the arts, community and innovation throughout the State.  It tells the stories of a range of Queenslanders who have lived all over the state, studied, worked, performed etc in a diverse range of areas.   The stories offer the hopes and dreams of families and communities and change over time. Various sporting luminaries tell their stories, as do those from business and the arts.

"There are people in the book who are well-known and those who are unknown, but should be known. I wanted to give a voice to those people who largely go unnoticed,'' Joan Burton-Jones.

“Australia is a young country by Western business standards and many of the people here have been pioneers or are the children of pioneers in their chosen field.  These stories have been approached from the point of view of people’s occupations.  The fit and disabled share their stories as do the old and young, the famous along with many unsung heroes. Here you will hear stories from the fruit and vegetable markets, from taxi drivers, firemen, lifesavers – stories full of hope, courage and larrikin humor – from those who generally are not heard, but without whose efforts our towns, cities and rural communities could not survive.  Above you can see photos of some of Queensland’s iconic businesses that you’ll find in the book, Billabong, Australia Zoo and Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary.” Joan Burton-Jones.

Bond University Vice-Chancellor Professor Robert Stable said the book was in keeping with the charter of BUP to publish high quality general, academic and educational works.

Queenslanders All Over will be important for current and future generations to obtain an appreciation of our State.’’

Joan has been a supporter of the drawings Helen does in her travel journals, and it is these works that that are  highlighted in Queenslanders All Over.

  •  1st - 5th September 2008
Helen Sanderson was invited to work with local Rockhampton artists in  the Artist in Residence Room of the Walter Reid Cultural Centre in Rockhampton recently.    The project was an initiative of  the  Rockhampton Art Gallery , and received funding from the Regional Arts Development Fund which is a partnership between State Government Arts Queensland and Rockhampton Regional Council.   During the  five days, the  artists explored
and absorbed the feel of the local river landscape,  learning much life on the river and its history.  Artists worked with  photography, drawing, rubbings, painting, and simple printmaking  techniques.  They worked to complete two artists' books during the week, most artists contributing to both.  The first book was aiming to  look at the architecture of the buildings along the Rockhampton reach  of the river, and the structure of the bridges crossing the river.
The second  book is a more organic book, documenting and exploring with the images  of the water, rocks, vegetation and people who use the river.  This  book also used some interesting found papers, as well as some hand  made papers.  Several children joined in with a dozen or more adults  who participated in the project.  Artists came from varying  backgrounds, and all learned from each other as well as from the  experimentation and
explorations they made on their own.    These books will be displayed in  the Rockhampton Art Gallery in conjunction with a larger exhibition  relating to the Fitzroy River.

    • This is an experimental workshop and could suit people interested in drawing, painting, printmaking and making artists books or quilts.  We will be exploring the local landscape of Sofala and possibly Hill End, through photography, drawing, painting, rubbings and gathering found objects.  With this repertoire, and local mapping and historical information, we will make quick spontaneous explorations to reduce, imbed, and layer this subject matter together to create images that deal with more than just a “what you see is what you get” image.  The experimental work will be bound into a simple reference book, and some more stand alone works on paper will be completed.
