The Women's Quilt #1 by Helen Sanderson
Description"I would make even if there was nowhere to show" quote by Marjorie Coleman taken from her response in the Women's Survey. The Women's Quilt #1 was created for the inaugural National Textile Biennial held at the Prospect Gallery in Adelaide South Australia. This was an invitational exhibition where artists created a work in response to a particular object. This quilt was the artists response to a survey Helen Sanderson conducted of women artists and arts administrators from around Australia. It was an attempt to have these people document their working lives at the end of the 20th century. Having explored her own family history and found the women's lives poorly documented, this topic was of importance to her. The survey was of great interest, and parts of it were scanned and fragments of these incorporated on to the surface of the quilt. This is a contemporary work using a traditional quilt structure to conjure its domestic and feminine associations. The definition of a quilt is: quilt: n. a bed coverlet consisting of 2 pieces with padding between, the three layers joined by lines of stitching. Traditionally quilting is a functional craft. The highly developed skills used by homemakers to utilise fabric scraps to create wonderfully patterned quilts are now the basis for art making skills. The role of this quilt is not functionality. I have used the traditional painters tools of paint and canvas. instead of a collection of scraps of fabrics, I have used a collection of text and images scanned and printed onto paper by a bubble jet printer. The work is a commentary on the commonplace details of women involved in the arts are the end of the 20th century.
